Welcome to 2019-2020 6th Grade Core - Mrs. Thompson's Class!

Welcome Families!

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year here in Room 702, sixth grade Core at Stanley Middle School!  I’m Rebecca Thompson and together we will be creating a family of learners in an environment where we are tolerant, kind, and encouraging of one another. We will work hard and learn a lot from each other. I can’t wait!

This first year of middle school will build upon what was learned in elementary school. Our Core class consists of three subjects: Writers Workshop, Readers Workshop, and History. In Writers Workshop, we will focus on learning about our language and how to use it effectively as writers and speakers. In Readers Workshop, we will practice using critical thinking strategies to get the most out of anything we read while deepening our understanding, thinking, theories, etc. And of course, fostering a passion to become lifelong readers. In History, we will explore the beginnings of our human story and the development of advanced cultures and civilizations. This will be a year of thinking and learning!

Just a little bit about me: This is my second year at Stanley. Prior, I was a 5th grade teacher at Creekside Elementary School in San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Even before that, I taught 4th grade at a K-8 Charter School in Los Angeles. Before I became a teacher I worked in marketing in the travel and tourism industry, also in Los Angeles. Although I still love to travel, my passion is teaching. I am a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (Go Mustangs!), and I have a Masters in Education from USC (Fight On!), as well as Readers and Writers Workshop training from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

My husband and I have two daughters, Claire (6) and Emily (3). We’ve lived in the Bay Area for over four years, so we still love playing tourist and exploring all the great things to do here!

On teaching, I have high standards and expectations for all of my students because I know that each and everyone of them is capable and can do it. I will of course be there to support each and every student along the way. I am always here to talk; so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Be on the lookout over the next few weeks for information about expectations and routines. I will be discussing these throughout the start of the school year. I will make sure that all students understand what is expected of them and what they are responsible for. School Loop and Google Classroom will be great resources for parents and students to use. So don’t forget to sign up. If you ever have any questions, please let me know. I’ll be happy to help.

Parent Survey: Please visit my School Loop website on the 6th grade Core homepage. You will find this letter with a link to a Google Forms Parent Survey. Please take a few minutes to fill out my survey so I can get to know your student a little bit better at the beginning of the year.

I feel privileged to be your child’s teacher this year. I am looking forward to a fantastic year at Stanley!

Welcome to Room 702 Core!
